Helpful Information

At Turner & Porter, we understand that following a funeral, there is still so much to do. We are pleased to assist with the following Healing Resources.

C.O.P.E.S. (Community of People Extending Support)
A six-week program that provides an outlet for people who have experienced the death of someone near to them. After a significant loss, people often feel isolated. The first days of sympathy quickly fade as life goes on for those less affected by the death. Some seem to expect the person should “be strong”, and that life should go back to normal.

This support group offers a combination of education and interaction creates an atmosphere in which grief is validated; where people can normalize their reactions, which they have felt abnormal. In the supportive environment of a group, people feel understood. Their grief is given legitimacy. They find out it is okay to feel the way they do. They learn that grief is a natural reaction to loss.

Among Friends
A continuation of our C.O.P.E.S. program, this group meets once a month at a local restaurant continuing their journey, supporting each other.

Funeral Etiquette

Even though common sense and good discretion are always the best guides to proper funeral etiquette, a few principles still apply.

Following the news of a death, you can obtain information by reviewing the death notice in the newspaper, our website or by contacting the Chapel entrusted with the arrangements. The information contained in the death notice will be family members, service details and perhaps a suggestion by the family about flowers and charities in remembrance of the Deceased.

Visitation – Service/Mass/Life Celebration
Your attendance will say more than words. Commonly, people express their support… “I’m sorry for your loss” or “Please accept my condolences”.

If you are unable to attend any part of the services, you may consider a call to the family, a card, email or on-line condolence.

Children
Many times it is not the children that fear the funeral home, it is the adults. There are no set rules that determine whether or not a child should be a part of this family event. It is a family event and children should be a part of it. It is essential that you have, before a child visits the Chapel, a discussion at a level they can understand of what is happening, about what will happen and what they will or may see at the Chapel. We have an extensive resources about this subject, we encourage you to contact us.

Choosing a Funeral Home

Choosing a funeral home can be a difficult decision. Here are four things to consider when making this important decision.

Whether a death has occurred, you’re pre-planning for yourself or for someone else, it’s important to select a funeral home that offers support, guidance and the ability to fulfill all your needs. Whether you select Turner & Porter or another funeral provider, we hope the following tips will assist your family select the appropriate choice for you.

Here are some important things to look for when selecting a funeral home:

1. A knowledgeable and caring staff
Many families have not had the experience in making funeral arrangements previously. Choosing a funeral home may be as simple as asking a family member or friend who they have used in the past. When someone dies, there are numerous decisions to make and make and details that will require attention. It’s important that the funeral home you select has an experienced and caring staff who will walk you through your various options and answer any questions you may have. Take the time you need to ensure all your questions have been answered and you are comfortable with the choices you made.

2. A full-service and reputable facility
Not all funeral homes are equal. Some funeral homes may offer limited services or not provide all of the necessary pricing information you will need to make an informed decision. Consider the funeral homes length of service, their reputation and involvement in the community. Additionally, you may confirm the funeral home is in good standing with the Ontario Board of Funeral Services by visiting www.funeralboard.com

3. The ability to accommodate all of your wishes and needs
Select a funeral home that will be able to accommodate the things that are important to you – whether it is a gathering, service, mass, celebration of life, reception, or any other wishes you may have. Ensure the funeral home is able to accommodate any religious or cultural needs. A funeral is something that only happens once. Be sure they have the ability to fulfill your wishes in the way you would like your loved one to be remembered.

4. A complete listing of fees
In Ontario, funeral homes are required to provide consumers an itemized price list of the services and merchandise they offer. Be concerned and aware if you have not received information to follow this format. Should you have any questions upon reviewing this information, without obligation, we would be pleased to review this information together with you.

Selecting a funeral home that can take care of all of your needs can make a difficult time much easier. Ask family and friends for a recommendation and consider the reputation of the funeral home. Contact the funeral home and set a time to meet. Request a tour of their facilities and ask lots of questions. Taking some time to consider recommendations of others, along with doing a little homework, will assist you in making the right choice for you.
