Many people choose to arrange their final wishes in advance. Besides addressing personal wishes, this thoughtful gesture will allow friends and family to spend less time making decisions during difficult moments and more time being with loved ones.
It’s the Right Thing to Do.
1. It is the responsible thing to do
Today, wise people plan ahead for many of life’s events – those both certain and uncertain. We plan for retirement savings plans, our children’s education, vacations, car and fire insurance, etc.
Take control and be organized. Making decisions that are right for you allows you to be in charge and relieves others guessing what your preferences would be.
2. Make decisions with a clear mind
When a death occurs there are 72 decisions that need to occur within just hours of a death. Of these 72 decisions, you can alleviate 67 of them by making these decisions in advance. Many of these decisions can be clarified by deciding both what you want and what you don’t want.
To receive the complete list of these 72 decisions give us a call.
3. Become aware of the various options available
Today, when it comes to funerals, there are far more options than even just a generation ago.
Preplanning can be a valuable learning experience. For instance, the decision of burial or cremation may be far greater than initially thought. For example, if you have selected cremation, have you considered what will happen to your cremated remains? Will they be kept at home, will they be scattered (all of them or just a portion), will they be forwarded to the place of your birth, divided into various potions, or placed into a cemetery grave. Perhaps, at this point, you are just not ready to decide…
A Turner & Porter counselor will be pleased to review a complete list of your funeral, burial and cremation options at absolutely no cost, or obligation, to you.
4. Take note of information that may otherwise be, and remain, unknown
There are so many things in life that we may take for granted that we can share with others at a later date – that favourite recipe, the names of people in our old photographs, and our collection of those ‘remember when’ stories.
Other information such as our parent’s names, our mother’s maiden name and parent’s birthplaces are too often forgotten. Family members often rely on this information to compose a newspaper death notice and future generations to research archives while they search their family tree. This information is also required by the province to register one’s death, much like registering a birth or marriage. Often, we find that if this information is not noted in advance, the information is recorded as not known and remains unknown.
To assist you in leaving a documented legacy, Turner & Porter would be pleased to offer you our complimentary “Memories” book, a place to note and share your life’s journey. Click here to receive your free copy now.
5. Determine who should have the responsibility for your arrangements
When someone dies, it is necessary that someone take the responsibility to complete the funeral arrangements.
Providing there is a will, it is the executor’s responsibility to initiate funeral arrangements. Should someone die without a will, it can be unclear who has the right to make decisions. The authority may not lay with the person you may initially think. Moreover, does the individual(s) who have the authority wish to exercise it?
Modern families often carry influences of various traditions and values. By spending a little time to determine who is ultimately responsible to make decisions in advance will often maintain the peace later on.
One of our Advance Planning Directors would be pleased to assist you in identifying who may have the legal authority to authorize funeral arrangements.
6. Personal choices to be considered
As everyone’s life tells it’s own individual story, so too, a meaningful funeral ceremony is often a tribute to the uniqueness of the life lived.
Photo and memorabilia displays, candle lighting, butterfly and dove releases are all examples of ways family members honour a life lived during a funeral ceremony.
Through the years, families have shared many of their creative ideas with us. Give Turner & Porter a call to find out your options and discuss meaningful ideas for a unique service.
7. Become aware of the various expenses
There are various costs associated with planning a funeral, cremation or burial. These areas may include the funeral home services, casket, urn and third party cash advances. To be fully informed, become aware of all of them.
In today’s economy, it is more important than ever to have all of the information to make an informed decision.

8. Explore the meaning of various customs and traditions
Have you ever wondered why certain rituals are performed as part of a funeral ceremony? Are there aspects that you find particularly interesting?
Find out why certain services are preformed and what may be right for you. Turner & Porter would be pleased to share this valuable information with you as you explore your various alternatives.
9. Selecting a funeral provider right for you
There are many things to consider when selecting a funeral home – their experience, reputation, community involvement, location and facilities may be just a few.
Is it important to you who owns the funeral home? Is it a large conglomerate that answers to shareholders or are they a local, family-owned funeral home who instead answers to you?
Give us a call to find out a few more of the reasons that may make Turner & Porter the right choice for you.
